PAPUAN, Jakarta --- One of the international human rights organization, Amnesty International (AI) has called on the Indonesian authorities to end attacks on freedom of expression in the region of Papua.
"The
attacks lately become a picture of a repressive environment faced by
political activists and journalists in the area, and continuing impunity
for human rights violations committed by the security forces there,"
wrote AI in a press release sent to the editor suarapapua com, Friday (29/08/2014) yesterday.
Mentioned,
on August 26, 2014, Martinus Yohame political activist found dead in
the sack, floating near the island of Nana in Sorong, West Papua
Province, with such injuries were reported, including a gunshot wound in
his chest.
Martin,
chairman of KNPB (West Papua National Committee) Sorong, a

other cases, advanced AI, in the same province, on August 8, police
arrested and alleged torture or mistreatment of two students in the
district of Manokwari for making pro-independence graffiti, including
calling for an independent referendum for Papua.

Robert Yelemaken, high school students 16 years old and wea Oni, a
college student aged 21 years, is also the KNPB activists.

They were then taken to the Manokwari District Police Office where the beating allegedly continued.
Robert
Yelemaken been released since then, but Oni wea still faces charges of
"incitement" under Article 160 of the Criminal Code.

AI, two French journalists were also arrested by the police on August 6
in Wamena, Papua province, and is still in custody for immigration
violations.

Their
arrests highlight continuing restrictions apply, faced by journalists,
human rights organizations, and other international regulatory
organizations to access the provinces of Papua and West Papua.
Areki
Wanimbo, chairman of the Great Council of Indigenous Lani, who has met
both journalists, were also arrested by the police on the same day and
accused of supporting separatist activities.

These
articles have been used arbitrarily to imprison dozens of people in
Papua because of their peaceful political activities, some up to 20
years.
"We
have long called for access to free and unhindered to the territory of
Papua for journalists and international human rights organizations, and
welcomed the promise of President-elect Joko Widodo in June 2014 that he
would open up access to the area if elected."
"The
right to freedom of expression, opinion and peaceful assembly
guaranteed by the Indonesian Constitution and the International Covenant
on Civil and Political Rights, to which Indonesia is a state his part,"
said Josef Benedict, AI campaign coordinator for Indonesia and East
Timor.
Furthermore,
he said, AI also called on the Indonesian authorities to repeal or at
least amend the legal products which limit the right to freedom of
expression, including Articles 106 and 110 of the Criminal Code, in
order to comply with the law and international human rights standards.
It
is said, the AI does not take any position related to the political
status of any province of Indonesia, including calls for independence.
"Nevertheless,
our organization believes that the right to freedom of expression
includes the right to peacefully advocate referendums, independence or
other political solutions," said Josef.
Attacks
on freedom of expression must end, and all prisoners of conscience
(prisoners of conscience) - such as college students Oni Wea, detained
solely for peacefully run their rights to freedom of expression - should
be immediately and unconditionally released.
Furthermore,
AI called on the authorities to investigate the rapid, thorough,
competent, and impartial to the murder of Martin Yohame and all
allegations of torture and ill-treatment.
"The
perpetrators of such crimes must be brought to justice in fair trials
without the death penalty, and the victims and their families should be
given reparations," said Josef.
